SPESIFIKASI Toshiba and Best Buy to Partner in Releasing a Notebook PC Just for Kids

SPESIFIKASI Toshiba and Best Buy to Partner in Releasing a Notebook PC Just for Kids

The netbook has been a popular computer for kids, but Toshiba and Best Buy think the little tikes will want more. To that end, they are set to release a version of Toshiba’s Satellite L635 notebook computer made with kids in mind exclusively at Best Buy.

The Satellite L635 Kids PC is the company’s first computer made with kids in mind. It is not a netbook but a 13.3-inch notebook computer.

The computer is targeted at 5 to 10-year-olds, which shows in the style. The notebook is a gender neutral gray with neon green accents on the corners of both the lid and the case as well as the buttons and print on the keyboard.

The software pre-loaded will be age specific for both education and entertainment. There will also be software to protect kids while on the web. The browser is KidZui, which gives parents some control over what kids can and cannot see. Also the computer will come with Net Nanny for Internet filtering. Disney will have some movies and LEGO’s Batman game comes with it too.

The Kids’ PC will have an HD display and a DVD drive as well as a webcam. The keyboard will be made of a material that can be wiped off with a damp cloth, so parents can get the jelly droppings off the keys and protect the investment. The outside is not glossy like so many notebooks today. The textured “Dura-cross” finish is meant to resist finger prints.

Thanks to a hands-on by the folks at Engadget we also know that inside, the computer has a dual-core Intel Celeron P4600 processor and 2GB of RAM. The hard drive has 250GB of space. The machine is 4.2 pounds. While it is not a powerhouse, it will be sufficient for most tasks your young child will want to do, other than playing more advanced games.

Available only at Best Buy, parents can get their little one the L635 Kids’ PC starting September 26 for $499.

SPESIFIKASI Toshiba recalls 41,000 burn hazard laptops

Users of Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite ProT130 laptops are advised to stop using the hardware immediately.

which will detect whether the hardware is overheating. Presumably, you should do this without using the power supply, as this is apparently the source of the problem.

Toshiba says it has so far received 129 reports of the power socket overheating and deforming the plastic case of the PC.

Two unfortunate punters have reported minor burns "which did not require medical treatment" and another two reported "minor property damage".

The units were sold worldwide between August 2009 and August 2010 and in this case all serial numbers are included in the recall.

Toshiba says the BIOS application will give further instructions as to whether a repair is required and that anyone without access to the Internet should contact them directly.

SPESIFIKASI Laptop MSI P600

SPESIFIKASI Laptop MSI P600

In the U.S., at least, MSI isn't known as a purveyor of business notebooks. While its ultraportable X-Slim series is light enough for executives on the go, the brand-new MSI P600 (the P is for "Professional") is the company's first North American notebook marketed toward the small- and medium-size business market. With a powerful Core i5 CPU, long battery life, fantastic webcam, and budget-friendly $650 price tag, the P600 has benefits anyone can appreciate, but not much in the way of business-friendly features.

Design

At 15.4 x 10 x 1.1 inches and 5.4 pounds, the MSI P600 isn't the lightest notebook on the block, but it's on a par with other 15.6 systems in the same price range, such as the Dell Studio 15z (5.4 pounds, 15 x 9.9 x 1 inches) and the Toshiba L505-GS5035, which is heavier at 6 pounds.

The P600's chassis has a conservative look that fits in the home or workplace. Its light-gray lid has a subtle grid pattern and hardly shows fingerprints, despite its glossy plastic finish. The black interior of the system sports a classier design as its textured deck and palm rest combine with an attractive island-style keyboard.

Buttons for the power, web browser launch, custom configurable shortcuts--and something rarely seen, an eject button for the optical drive--all sit above the keyboard. Strangely, there is no button on the optical drive itself.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style keyboard looks attractive, has a numeric keypad, and offers an acceptable, though unexceptional, level of tactile feedback. However, the palm rest is so deep we felt like we had to reach too far to get to the home row. We also found the CTRL and Fn keys to be a bit undersized, making it difficult to do things such as lower and raise the brightness without looking. We were able to achieve our typical rate of 80 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, though our 2 percent error rate was a bit higher than normal. Considering that the MSI P600 is marketed as a business notebook
, we were surprised that its keyboard is not spill-resistant.

The 3.1 x 2-inch touchpad seems small in relation to the P600's giant palm rest. The pad has an attractive dotted surface that offers a bit too much resistance. As we tried to navigate around the desktop, our finger kept getting stuck on the textured dots. Multitouch gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom, work but aren't as smooth as we'd like. The two discrete mouse buttons were just a little bit stiff, but more inconvenient was their placement nearly an inch deep into the palm rest, wasting valuable space and forcing us to reach farther than we'd like to click. If you choose to use an external mouse, there's a touchpad lock button located directly above the pad.

SPESIFIKASI LAPTOP Asus N82Jv-X1

SPESIFIKASI LAPTOP Asus N82Jv-X1

The ASUS
N82Jv-X1 is a great system that's short on time. It has an eye-catching lid covering a powerful Core i5 processor and a discrete GPU, plus Nvidia's graphics-switching Optimus technology. Unfortunately, like its non-Optimus sibling, a short battery life hinders its endurance, but if you can find an outlet quick enough this system will make sure you don't regret it.

Design

At 5.2 pounds and 13.8 x 9.7 x 1.4 inches, the N82Jv-X1 ($999) is a little heavier and thicker than competitors such as the lighter and slimmer Gateway ID49C08u. Though it's light enough to carry in your bag, the N82Jv-X1's bulk takes up more space than we'd like.

The lid is fitted with an interesting cubed pattern in dark brown that has a metallic effect when the light hits it just right. Similar to the Asus N82JQ-A1, the inside deck is accented with a soft-touch matte finish that helps keep the area fingerprint-free.

The right physical power button (which has a white status indicator light) and corresponding left instant-on button fit in with the design of the N82Jv-X1, but we would've liked to see shortcut launch keys or dedicated media controls. Having to use a function command to adjust the volume (Function key + F12 to increase or F11 to decrease) during gameplay is slightly annoying.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The ASUS N82Jv's chiclet-style keyboard provided adequate feedback, important when playing first-person shooters, and we have no complaints about the key arrangement. We noticed less flex with the N82Jv-X1 compared to the N82Jq-A1.

The 3.25 x 2-inch touchpad is fairly large and has a textured surface (the same as the cubed pattern on the lid) that prevented our finger from slipping when gaming or navigating through Windows 7. Its single mouse button was a bit stiffer than we'd like, though.
Display and Audio

The glossy 14-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel LED-backlit display produced reasonably bright images and sharp colors, but viewing angles left something to be desired. The screen's high gloss can be a distraction in certain conditions, but the trade-off for deeper colors is worth it. The glare wasn't disruptive even in our well-lit lab, though sunlight was a much larger problem.

When watching videos, playback on the ASUS N82Jv-X1 was smooth and noise-free. Streaming "The Wanda Sykes Show" from FOX.com was smooth, but picture quality was noticeably pixelated. However, pixelation was absent when watching a 720p trailer of the movie "Takers" streamed in QuickTime.

Despite being positioned below the keyboard, the Altec Lansing speakers were loud and clear while listening to Jay-Z and Tupac via Pandora, and we didn't hear any distortion or tinniness typical of most notebook speakers. Their position on the front lip of the system helps keep the speakers from accidentally being blocked while typing. At maximum volume, the sound isn't overpowering, yet it's loud enough to fill a quiet medium-size room.

Ports and Webcam

The N82Jv-X1 certainly isn't lacking for ports. On the left side of the system is a VGA connection, headphone and mic inputs, an HDMI port, and a super-fast USB 3.0 port. Hidden behind a small plastic door on the right side is a standard USB 2.0 connector, an eSATA port, and an Ethernet connection. Between the speakers on the front of the system is a 5-in-1 memory card reader.

The 2-megapixel webcam produced clear images when video conferencing through Skype and audio quality was crystal clear. On the other hand, images were a bit noisy and motion detection lagged a little. The N82Jv-X1 is bundled with ASUS's LifeFrame software that allows you to capture video and snap pictures, then edit the content and apply special effects. Its facial recognition technology isn't perfect, but the pre-effects in LifeFrame are worth trying out.

In his blog posting last week, Microsoft warned anyone that deadline XP is getting closer, especially for a netbook. As of October 22, 2010, "OEMs are no longer able to pre-install Windows XP Home in new netbook PC" no matter how many consumers who want it. So write Microsoft.

According to Microsoft the quotes NPD Retail Tracking Service, as of April 2010 approximately 81% of the netbooks that were sold retail in the U.S. comes pre-installed with Windows 7.
